Alex Iwobi has urged the Confederation of African Football (CAF) to consider scrapping the third place match in the AFCON tournament.

According to the Nigerian midfielder, the third place match is a huge waste of time and resources as most of the players are yet to come to terms with the semifinal loss only to be tasked with playing another tensed match.

It should be recalled that Nigeria defeated Egypt in the third place match after both teams lost in their various semifinal matches against Morocco and Senegal respectively.

However the qualification matches for the next AFCON (2027) tournament in Kenya, Uganda and Tanzania will begin in March of 2026.
