The 2025 African Cup Of Nations (AFCON) is upon us and we are going to look at the five teams that have the potentials to win the AFCON.

We are going to look into each team’s lineup, style of play, and their past 5 matches across all competitions. Also, we will look off-field activities that could either help them win or distract them from winning.

1. Ivory Coast



Well known for being a hard nut to crack, won it twice in the last ten years. The Elephant as they are known as won the last edition (2023) of the Africa Cup Of Nations (AFCON) which they hosted. 

This year’s edition they have started on fire, winning their first game. In what many described as one of the most tensed matches of the tournament so far.

A well taken goal by the Manchester United striker, Amad Diallo was enough to seal the victory for the West African giants. It is widely believed that they would reach semi final of this tournament.

2. Morocco



A well coordinated team, from the defense to the attack this team, the Atlas Lions, have shown that they have the steel to push through. Reached the semi finals of the last World Cup in Qatar, got eliminated in last AFCON edition quarterfinals, they team has seen an improvement in their style of play.

The Moroccan football Federation have made a conscious effort at improving the football fortunes of the country’s football team’s starting with the male teams to female teams.

The female team have come close to winning the WAFCON twice against South Africa and Nigeria respectively, unfortunately they could not win.

This AFCON is not just a tournament for the African continent, it is a dress rehearsal to see how prepared Morocco is or will be to be part of the trio hosts of the FIFA World Cup in 2030.

3. Nigeria


Nicknamed the Super Eagles of Nigeria. This team have featured 13 times in the last 15 AFCON semi finals they have participated in, of which they have finished in the top 3 12 times.

The Super Eagles is a known powerhouse when it comes to African football, and the AFCON being a major tournament is where the Super Eagles flexes their power.

Finishing second in the last edition left a bitter taste being the team may be determined to erase the memories of that taste.

4. South Africa



The sleeping giants. This is exactly what South Africa is mostly seen as. South Africa have made a steady and conscious effort towards being a powerhouse in African football. In the last 3 editions we have seen their style of play, level of intensity and purpose that have characterized their football.

In the last edition of the AFCON, South Africa came third but this was after a tensed game against the Nigerian Super Eagles in the Semifinal which ended in a penalty shootout (which they lost).

We saw their intensity, their drive, their willpower to play the match to the end. The Bafana Bafana (this is their nickname) is determined to do better this time around and they have started on a good note.

5. Egypt



The Pharaohs of Egypt once ruled the African continent in the early years of the 21st century (2006, 2008, and 2010). Their recent style of play is something looking into. Unfortunately they seem to be dependent on Mo Salah which is not a good thing.

However, the Pharaohs are determined to regain their status again on the African football. They have shown serious intent in getting back to the level they used to be, they have qualified for 3 FIFA World Cups in a row, rebranded their squad, and have shown ability to attack and defend in their games.

We may not have written about other top teams in this edition of the AFCON, however, be rest assured that is subsequent writings we will look into every other top team expected to challenge for the AFCON glory this year.
