The African Cup Of Nations (AFCON) will be played every 4 years. This is coming from the Confederation Of African Football (CAF) President, Patrice Motsepe.

This means that the next AFCON tournament after the 2027 event to be hosted by Kenya, Tanzania and Uganda will be in 2031. According to the information we got, this will give African players plying their football trade in Europe the opportunity to solidify their place in their respective football clubs as there would be no need to leave the club every 24 months to play in the AFCON.

However, there are opposition voices to this arrangement, according to them, this move will mean lesser money coming to African football as CAF generates more than 75% of its revenue from the AFCON. These voices are mostly African countries who rely on the yearly subvention from CAF.

However, there are those who are of the opinion that this is the hand of Gianni Infantino (FIFA President). According to this set of people; CAF is now being administered from Zurich. For this set of people this is a promise made by the president prior to the 2019 AFCON tournament in Egypt where he suggested that the AFCON should become a four year affair.

Furthermore, the CAF president has promised to restructure African football. According to him, CAF has concluded plans to introduce the African Nations League and will be played every September, October and November. This league will be organized like what is already underway in Europe.

However, what observers are now asking is this, what will happen to the Championship of African Nations (CHAN). This is tournament organized by CAF for players who play in their own country leagues. These observers are of the opinion that this tournament has not fully developed and you are going to set up another tournament to develop.
