There have been conflicting reports about the decision to drop some big name players from the Nigerian squad ahead of the AFCON. The Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) has come out to explain why these players were dropped.

Their explanation is coming on heels on serious public backlash and allegations of vested interests not allowing the coach to select the players he wants for the team.

According to the NFF it has become important to make some clarifications; 

In their statement, they said that Maduka Okoye and his club (Udinese) were of the opinion that if he wasn’t going to be the first choice goalkeeper then there was no need allowing him to be part of the AFCON team. This the NFF frowned at.

On Tolu, the federation said that the decision was hugely based on the Coach’s observations of his work. 

Then, for Terem Moffi he excused himself so as to sort out issues with his club, most especially as he allegedly handed in a January transfer request.

Aina on other hand, is just recovering from a long term injury same as Kelechi Iheanacho.
